Good News!

This year, you won't have to take a trek up to Santa Rosa (although it's pretty amazing and we recommend that you do!) if you want to do something good and at the same time have a glass of the super rare & delicious beer, Russian River's "Framboise For A Cure!

Russian River's "Framboise for a Cure" is a Blonde Ale aged in Chardonnay barrels with brett, lacto, and pedio (base beer is Temptation). This sour barrel-aged blonde ale has 31 pounds per barrel of fresh raspberries to make a beautiful reddish/pink beer! Nicely balanced with sweet raspberry and tartness. This beer is made only once a year in conjunction with their month-long fundraiser for the Sutter Breast Care Services of Santa Rosa during Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Tasting Notes from Stone Brewing Co.

-Stone 09.09.09 Vertical Epic Ale (8.6%abv)

Bold and smooth chocolate malt flavors combine with a Belgian yeast lending tropical fruit/banana flavors and hints of spiciness, all complemented by citrus notes from an addition of tangerine peel. Rich vanilla beans add a nice counter to the chocolate malt - enhancing the chocolatiness. The finish is smooth, with additional traces of vanilla and toasted characters from French Oak.

Appearance: This beer pours deep brown with a thick, frothy, creamy head of tan foam.

Aroma: Many layers, starting off with chocolate and coffee from the chocolate malt, and vanilla notes from both the vanilla bean and French Oak. A balanced oak flavor comes through in the mix. As the beer warms, the influence of the Belgian yeast is more evident, as tropical fruit and spice flavors become more pronounced.

Flavor: Begins with chocolate roast malt character and vanilla. The vanilla accentuates the chocolate nicely.
Layered in are banana esters, and hints of clove, and then the finish is a bit stronger on the oak with hints of molasses and citrus from the tangerine peel.

Palate: Medium body, very complex, and finishes smooth. Alcohol is not overly evident, flavors blend together nicely.

Stone 10.10.10 Vertical Epic Ale (9.5%abv)

A Belgian-style golden triple is the starting point of this beer, but the first left turn is nearly immediate with the addition of dried chamomile flowers, triticale, and Belgian amber candi sugar. The second, and rather unusual left turn takes us half an hour up the road from Stone to Temecula courtesy of the addition of just-pressed Muscat, Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc grapes from our friends at South Coast Winery. As the Stone Vertical Epic Ale series has moved through the calendar, they found that the brewing schedule for a 10.10.10 release coincided nicely with the grape harvest, neatly providing an interesting twist in this epic ale.

Appearance: Pours hazy gold with a creamy white head of foam.

Aroma: A blend of banana, wine and berry esters, with hints of clove and chamomile.

Flavor: The taste shows an increased intensity of fruit flavors as the varietal character of the Muscat, Gewurztraminer, and Sauvignon Blanc juice starts to assert itself mid-palate. The beer is tart and extremely dry, a result of the acidity of the grapes, and finishes with a lingering aftertaste of wine, banana esters and a hint of chamomile.
Palate: It is an enjoyable beer to taste, possessing an elegance and complexity of flavors that show different aspects throughout the palate.

-Stone 11.11.11 Vertical Epic Ale (9.4%abv)

Ale brewed with Anaheim chills and cinnamon. Not your typical chili beer! The famous mild green chilies from the Hatch Valley in New Mexico add layers of delicious flavor with a very mild heat component. The base beer itself is very reminiscent of a European amber beer, with Perle and Pacific Jade hops, Munich and other roasted German and Belgian malts, hopped and brewed to a very Stone like. Cinnamon is a wonderful spice if used judiciously, which we did here-it doesn't by any means dominate the beer's flavor, but definitely adds a subtly complex spice note that blends amazingly well with the bananaesters and green chili.

Appearance: Pours a deep amber with a cream colored head of foam.

Aroma: The Belgian yeast strain we used this year has more pronounced banana aromatics than the clove flavors produced by some of the yeast strains we have used in past years. Mixed in with the banana esters are toffee malt notes, hints of spice-clove and cinnamon-, and a trace of very mild green chili in the back. The aromas all blend together incredibly well.

Flavor:Upfront the banana yeast-derived flavors are blended very nicely with toasted and toffee-like malt flavors, fruity esters, and balanced hints of cinnamon.

Palate: Mid palate the Perle and Pacific Jade hops and the Hatch green chili flavors come through. The beer finishes dry, and bitter with just the tiniest hint of chili heat and a touch of alcohol.

-Stone 12.12.12 Vertical Epic Ale (9.4%abv)

In this, the final edition, you can expect a perfectly balance *womp* of spices: cinnamon, ginger, allspice, sweet orange peel, clove (only a little!) and rosehips, all in the context of a dark Belgian style abbey-ish beer…but not as sweet. Dry even. Stone style.

Have a strong arm? Stien Holding Contest held Saturday, Oct 6th - 11am - 4pm

Some of the Drafts that will be tapped at 11am:

Traditional top fermented reddish-brown ale from the West-Flanders region.
A blend of 8 and 18 months old ales following careful maturation in oak casks. 100% natural and unpasteurized.

A characteristic Old Flemish Brown, red-brown and crystal-clear with a fruity and flowery nose and sourish flavor that tingles on the tongue.  Matured in Oak Casks.

Made by mixing young and old Lambics. A great balance between sweet, sour and slightly bitter,
made in Ingelmunstener.  An ideal thirst-quencher on a sultry summer’s day.

A slightly sweet beer, perfectly balanced with the sourness of the mother beer, Lambic.
25% Williamette raspberries & natural sugars.

Brewed for over a century respecting a unique and very old brewing process, “infusion of Lambic.”
A selection of the finest Lambic is mixed with a high fermentation brown ale;
but it is only after 6 months of maturation, in oak barrels, that this ale can be savored.

Unblended old lambic, aged for 18 months or more.
It has a robust character with a full body and overtones of vanilla, dried cherry, stone fruit and cocoa.

Brewed according to the ancestral lambic recipe. This original Belgian beer ferments spontaneously.
Enriched with cherries, it matures soft and slowly in oak casks.

The unfiltered geuze beer is a balanced mixture of old and young lambics, fermented for at least 1 year.
Filtered geuze is the result of a careful dilution process.  An amber-coloured, crisp sour-sweet thirst quencher.

A blend of Flanders sourced lambics with a collaboratively-brewed version of the famous Hair of the Dog “Fred.”
The nose is complex with notes of lemon, pine, tropical fruits and spice.  The palate is rich and layered with toffee, apricot and almond, balanced by some green apple, a hoppy bitterness and barnyard funk.

Characterized by its aromatic hops and lightly roasted malts. A mildly bitter aftertaste and a lower alcohol content make this beer a tasty and very drinkable beer.  This is a classic drink associated with the city of Antwerp!

LIEFMANS CUVEE BRUT brewed w Cherries & Champagne yeast 6%
Cuvee-Brut begins with a Flemish brown ale that has matured on fresh whole cherries for a year.
It is then blended with Oud Bruin and Goudenband ales of differing ages. The result is well-balanced.

A blend of the Vicaris Tripel & Giradin Gueuze. The nose has notes of malt, vanilla and spice while a full body and long finish are balanced by a fine, dry hop bite.

belgium independence day

It's that time of year again!
Join us, starting on Thursday July 19th at 4pm
(continuing through the weekend) to
Celebrate Belgian Independence Day.

We will be doing Limited Edition Glass giveaways (until supplies last) and have Limited Release Beers on Draft
Featuring Duvel, Ommegang & A'Chouffe Beers

JULY 21, 1831 commemorates when the Belgians said 'Enough' to the Dutch. Enough with the wooden shoes. Enough tulips. And they celebrated their independence by doing what they do better than anyone-they had a beer festival.

A few of the beers we'll be tapping:

Ommegang "Biere D'Hougoumont" Biere De Garde 7.3%
Ale Aged on Maple & Oak Wood Staves. Brewed with Traditional French Ale Yeast, Eight Malts, French Strisselspalt hops, and aged on white oak and hard maple wooden staves. A traditional Biere De Garde style, this malty French-style farmhouse ale is brewed to be aged. The name honors the Hougoumont farmstead at the pivitol center of the Waterloo battlefield. Napoleon repeatedly failed to take the fortification, he then lost the battle and "met his Waterloo."

Ommegang "Belgian Independence Day Triple" 2012" 8.3%
Ale Brewed with Ommegang, Duvel & Chouffe yeasts. In honor of both it's independence and it's signature Tripel style, this Belgian-style ale is brewed with a Belgian candi sugar and a combination of Ommegang, Duvel & Chouffe yeasts. The unsung hero of brewing, the yeast strand dramatically influences the flavor and aroma profile of a beer. Three yeasts join here together to forge one remarkable brew.

Ommegang & Moorgat "Gnomegang" Belgian Strong Ale 9.5%
This delectable blonde ale is a co-creation of two famed farmstead breweries: Brewery Ommegang and Brasserie d’Achouffe. It employs five fine malts, two noble hops, and both of the distinctive Chouffe and Ommegang yeasts. You’ll enjoy the smooth drinkability, fruity aromas and flavors, and warming finish

d'Achouffe "La Chouffe" Belgian Blonde Ale 8%
Golden Ale, strong, spicy, lightly hoppy, with evolving taste. Natural beer, bottle conditioned, unfiltered, not pasteurised and without any additives

d'Achouffe "Houblon Chouffe" Belgian Triple & IPA
A unique marriage between the English tradition of IPAs, the new American revolution of Imperial IPAs and the classic Belgian way of brewing. Houblon Chouffe, although very much hopped as it is, showcases the unique balance between a very strong IPA and a very special Belgian Tripel exclusively created for this ale (Big malty body, distinct dryness, expressive estery fruitiness).

d'Achouffe "McHouffe Chouffe" Belgian Brown Ale 8%
The Mc CHOUFFE is an unfiltered dark beer, which is re-fermented in the bottle as well as in the keg. Behind its fruity flavour a slight hint of bitterness may be found.

d'Achouffe "Biere du Soleil" Belgian Farmhouse Ale 4.5%
Amber coloured, fruity, hoppy, sparkling and is not pasteurized. Available from June 1st.

Founders & Green Flash Tap Takeover!!!

green flash
This weekend we will be having a Founders Brewery & Green Flash Tap Takeover! In Celebration of their first-time, limited release
Collaboration Beer "Linch Pin" White IPA.
A lineup to not be missed!

  • All Day IPA:
The beer you've been waiting for. Keeps your taste satisfied while keeping your senses sharp. An all-day IPA naturally brewed with a complex array of malts, grains and hops. Balanced for optimal aromatics and a clean finish. The perfect reward for an honest day's work and the ultimate companion to celebrate life's simple pleasures. 4.7% ABV 42 IBUs

  • Red's Rye:
Serious hop bitterness, along with an unyielding grapefruit bouquet from the Amarillo dry hop, balances the malty richness of four varieties of imported Belgian caramel malts. Pours a spectacular crimson with a creamy tan head. A generous addition of rye malt accentuates a spicy, crisp finish. 6.6% ABV 70 IBUs

  • Dirty Bastard:
So good it's almost wrong. Dark ruby in color and brewed with seven varieties of imported malts. Complex in finish, with hints of smoke and peat, paired with a malty richness and a right hook of hop power to give it the bad attitude that a beer named Dirty Bastard has to live up to. Ain't for the wee lads. 8.5% ABV 50 IBUs

  • Double Trouble:
An imperial IPA that was brewed to turn your world upside down. Hops will get you coming and going. Pungent aromatics up front pair with a malt-balanced backbone and a smooth, bitter finish. 9.4% ABV 86 IBUs

  • Old Curmudgeon:
Think classic seafaring ports, local pubs, and weathered old fishermen. This old ale is brewed with molasses and an insane focus on the malt bill, then oak-aged. The result is a strong, rich, malty delight that's deceptively smooth and drinkable. 9.8% ABV 50 IBUs
  • Centennial IPA:
Get ready to bask in the glory of the frothy head's floral bouquet. Relish the citrus accents from the abundance of dry hopping. This one's sweet, yet balanced. Malty undertones shake hands with the hop character for a finish that never turns too bitter. 7.2% ABV 65 IBUs

  • Porter:
Pours silky black with a creamy tan head. The nose is sweet with strong chocolate and caramel malt presence. No absence of hops gives Founders' robust porter the full flavor you deserve and expect. Cozy like velvet. It's a lover, not a fighter. 6.5% ABV 45 IBUs

Green Flash Brewing

  • Linch Pin White IPA (Green Flash Founders Collab)
“There’s a lot going on in this beer with two yeast strains, copious amounts of wheat malt, and a big focus on ‘C’ hops to deliver a citrus explosion,” explains Green Flash Brewmaster, Chuck Silva. “In fact we lined up more than a dozen hop varieties in the brewery to select three hops with the biggest citrus character to dry hop the beer.

“The citrus aromas that jump from the glass are largely tangerine up front with other types of citrus notes that mingle with the Belgian yeast esters. Hop flavors of bitter orange zest dominate the brew and linger to the finish with a nice play of American and Belgian yeast combo.”

A beer with so many components can be held together with a “Linchpin”. The official “Linchpin” of this beer is the skillful collaboration between the two breweries to create a unique hop-forward brew. Linchpins are symbolic: two simple shapes that combine to strengthen a bond amongst many different pieces.

  • Palate Wrecker:
Palate Wrecker was originally brewed for the Hamilton’s Tavern 2nd Anniversary celebration. It’s the most complicated West Coast–inspired IPA we have ever brewed—mashing and sparging with hopped wort, in addition to our hop layering regimen for IPA. By popular demand, it is now released for the world to enjoy. ALC. BY VOL. 9.5% | IBUS: 100+

  • 30th St. Pale:
Originally released for the Green Flash 6th Anniversary Celebration and brewed to recognize the synergy behind the craft beer culture on 30th Street in San Diego. This American Pale Ale is very well bittered and dry-hopped, making it taste like an IPA by many hop head's and other brewer's standards. Our 30th Streete Ale™ has become a staple in all our favorite local neighborhood pubs and restaurants on a stretch of 30th Street from Golden Hill through South Park and North Park to Normal Heights. 6% ABV, 45 IBUs

  • West Coast IPA:
A menagerie of hops is layered throughout the brewing process: Simcoe for unique fruitiness and grapefruit zest, Columbus for strong hop pungency, Centennial for pine and citrus notes and Cascade for floral aroma. A multi-dimensional hop experience.
    ALC. BY VOL. 7.3% | IBUS: 95

  • Le Freak:
An ‘out of the box’ modern ale crafted by converging two beer styles, Belgian Trippel and American Imperial IPA. Dry-Hopped and Bottle-Conditioned – it’s a zesty brew with enticing American hop and fruity Belgian yeast aromatics. ALC. BY VOL. 9.2% | IBUS: 101

  • Double Stout:
Golden naked oats mashed with dark crystal and robust roasted malts create a luscious black brew with satin smooth finish. An old-world style, done the Green Flash way. Big, bold, flavorful and complex. ALC. BY VOL. 8.8% | IBUS: 45

  • Imperial IPA:
San Diego IPA, as it has come to be known by many, is pale in color, super-hoppy, high-gravity, yet a highly quaffable ale. Our Imperial IPA is created in this new tradition with intense hop flavors and aromas from a unique blend of Summit and Nugget hops. ALC. BY VOL. 9.4% | IBUS: 101

  • Trippel Ale
Rich, pale malt flavors provide a solid base for zesty Styrian Golding and Czech Saaz hopping. Trappist ale yeast contributes the fruity, spicy profile of classic, monk-brewed, Belgian ales. Our Trippel is a luscious, fiery, golden brew and a contemporary rendition of traditional Belgian Trippel. ALC. BY VOL. 9.7% | IBUS: 24
